Kitchen motors met kippi kaninus on an experimental balloon ride out in Bú›ardalur, Iceland’s equivalent of Twin Peaks. There he was, just like the kitchen kids, going for a picnic inside the balloon. He had a basket full of red green and yellow jellybeans and that’s when we knew we’d become good friends. He said: “Wouldn’t it be good if we could just ride this balloon all over the world and throw jellybeans to earth where they’d transform into songs when all kinds of people would pick them up as they were going about their everyday lives. Maybe the songs could even add something to their day. They’d be cleaning leaves from their roof gutters when they’d find a yellow, red or a green song that would play itself for them and then become their friend.”

Kitchen Motors thought Kippi’s mission was good so it was decided to put out his music. Huggun is Kippi’s second album, Í sí_degiskaffinu sígild hljómlist (“afternooncoffee classical music”) dressed in red cardboard and feathers being his first offspring, released in limited edition by Kippi himself. It sold out in one blink of the eye just like hot waffles.

His music: Organic electronica, interwoven with clever nano beats and hidden melodies. His beats are mostly made from various play with contact mikes. Sometimes he places the mikes within apples and records while biting or he puts them into pencil sharpeners and records while sharpening. The Kippi atmos is closely related to that of cheery múm and the morr music family although more acoustic at times with hints at his classical roots. Kippi has been studying singing for years although he doesn’t flaunt his voice on the album except for a few moments sung by his choir, Mótettukór Hallgrímskirkju (/”Church of Hallgrímur) in Reykjavík. Thanks to Kippi, church guests of Hallgrímskirkja can now have hot waffles with cream and rubharb jam after mass.

Huggun is Kitchen Motors’ first release by a solo artist, perhaps a confirmation of that anything can be expected from the Kitchen. We take pleasure in the absurd and celebrate collaboration between different artists, but we know good music when we hear it in which case nothing else matters. We feel Kippi Kaninus has a strong voice that is relevant to contemporary music and should be heard.

Kippi Kaninus has already met extremely good vibrations in his home town, Reykjavík where everyone has their own jellybean friend by now and is without doubt the most interesting electronic act to come out of Iceland since múm.
