Emily Wardill is an artist who works beyond comprehension, albeit in familiar territory. Her work is based on ideas of communication and its hijacking of materialities that are alien to it.

In VARIOUS, SMALL, MILK, AND, Wardill shows large-scale rayograms based on credit lists from a previous film and reliefs where she works with the idea of a shirt (that peculiar basic shape in our culture) as an object, drawing, painting, sculpture and even performer. The exhibition deals with dimensionality – something that is one thing pretending to be another: A sculpture trying to be flat, a film made of images wanting to act like words or a text wanting to be an image.
Her new film on the subject of fire, No Trace of Accelerator (2017), is based on a case study of actual events that took place in the 90s where a street in a small village in France was sieged by multiple unexplainable fires. Wardill bases her work on the truth of those events, tropes from cinema, psychological clarities, fear and poetry. It is a film on horror and the everyday. The main character is fire – or rather the idea of fire. It's inpredictability is married to the improvisatory techniques used in development.

If one is a film or art enthusiast then Emily Wardill is certainly one of the most fun and mysterious artists of our time.

The exhibition opens on the 26th of August at 5pm.
