Maria Jasnorzewska-Pawlikowska

translation by Marek Lugowski,

Maria Jasnorzewska-Pawlikowska (1891-1945) was one of the all-time greats of Polish poetry. Between the world wars, she was considered an ally of the noted Polish poetry group, "Skamander". In 1935 she received the Golden Laurel from the Polish Academy of Literature. At the onset of German occupation, in September 1939, she left for England through Rumania and France with her husband, an officer of air force. She died in Manchester shortly after the war. The poem "Barwy" is from her first collection of poems, "Niebieskie Migdaly" (literally, "Blue Almonds"; idiomatically, "Fancy Moon-junes" or "Idle Musings").
