The linseed oil that was spilt and wiped up with a thin kitchen towel has dried into it. The paper towel has taken on a new form, become a different substance which is thick and final, in the sense that it is no longer disposable. It has become soaked, is saturated, imbued with a new quality, that of resisting water, the opposite of what was, when it absorbed the slightest moisture. It resembles a waxed cotton cloth, as was used in raincoats, oilskins and other waterproofs for protection against the elements.
