"TRACES"

STAFF HOUSE:
This two-storey building is situated on a basaltic hill south of the cemetary grounds of Gufunes cemetary in Reykjavik. The project is inspired by the site's environment and location - working with different scales & looking at spaces between the basaltic rocks with the aim of translating these natural spaces into architectural space. The upper floor includes a conference room, reception and offices, while the lower level contains technical and working areas.

The artwork in the building is based on close dialogue
between artists Berghall and Arkibullan architects.

The wall piece “Traces”, is made of cast concrete elements that create a pattern along ta long curved wall in the buildings conference room, the pattern is based on aerial view of the placement of the largest basaltic rocks on the building site before development started.

COLOR FIELDS

The basaltic rocks were registered by Arkibúllan before development started, and this documentation was used by Berghall in realization of the work "Traces" in the buildings conference room, "Traces" resembles a constellation of stars but is also a remembrance of something previously there that now is gone.   Each element is cast in white concrete and all elements differ from each other.
