A woman and child walk across the field of grass and
other plants. It is early summer and the grass is still
pale green and immature. Dandelions spread out. The
child has picked a little bouquet. They follow the footpath
that has been trodden by many walkers in the grass.
It is quite a long way for little legs. There is a scent
of summer. The woman holds a metal flask; it is empty.
The lid is on. A small chain connects the lid to the
flask, and it makes a slight but rhythmical metallic
sound as it swings back and forth. As they approach
the buildings, the smell changes to that of animals,
the precious beasts that give milk. They mount decrepit
concrete steps, there is no hand rail. The house is
a concrete house with a sloping roof and a small entry
built on the front, continuing from the outside steps.
The woman and child wait in the entry while the lady
of the house fills the flask with foaming milk. The
woman does not pay for the milk, as it is in return
for a favour from the doctor.
